Description
The organisations purposes are: i) The advancement of religion through the spiritual principles of Buddhism. This will be achieved through: a. Providing visiting pastoral services to prisoners and others who are legally detained. b. Helping to raise awareness of Buddhism by providing introductory courses exploring Buddhist principles and practice without adherence to any specific Buddhist school while promoting the core beliefs of taking refuge in Buddha, Dharma (teachings) and Sangha (the Buddhist community). c. Providing support and opportunities for Buddhist prisoners to deepen their practice through study, rituals and collective meditation. d. Contributing a Buddhist perspective to the work of the inter-faith team to provide spiritual support to those within the Scottish criminal justice system. e. Working with Buddhist chaplains within other settings as required. ii) The relief of those in spiritual need by reason of their imprisonment by: Encouraging prisoners to take responsibility for their past actions and to have faith in the possibility of a better future. Providing prisoners with tools such as mindfulness and other techniques to cultivate empathy and compassion to help increase their sense of wellbeing and their ability to relate positively to others. Providing prisoners with a framework for understanding and meeting the challenges and difficulties of their lives. Offering prisoners support in their transition to life in the community as they endeavour to rebuild their lives.
