Description
The Associations aims & objectives (the Objectives) are to promote sign language translation and interpreting in Northern Ireland (the area of benefit), in so far as is charitable and for the public benefit, by (but not limited to) the following activities: a. To advance the profession, rights and interests of sign language interpreters and translators in Northern Ireland. b. To work in close partnership with organisations and service providers in Northern Ireland for the future benefit of the deaf community who use the two sign languages used in Northern Ireland and professional interpreters & translators, Deaf and hearing, whose working languages include a signed language. This coincides with the agreement set forward by the World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) and the World Association of Sign Language lnterpreters (WASLI). c. To support collaboration, cooperation and mutual, transparent communication between the deaf community and sign language interpreters at international, national, regional and local levels. d. To encourage best practice in sign language interpreting by working towards: I. Serving as the representative body for professional sign language interpreters & translators in Northern Ireland II. Working in close partnership with organisations for the future benefit of the deaf community in Northern Ireland and the profession of interpreters whose working languages include a Signed Language III. Supporting and collaborating with programs designed to facilitate the education and training of interpreters and translators. IV. Upholding and promoting the Code of Ethics and Guidelines for Professional Conduct V. Recognising the importance of evaluation of interpreters & translators in Northern Ireland whose working languages include a signed language e. To provide advice and support to users and providers of interpreting services and other interested individuals and/or organisations. f. To represent the interests of the profession of Sign Language interpreting and translating to appropriate bodies g. To encourage and promote initiatives to improve standards of Sign Language interpreting and interpreter training on the island of Ireland h. To work to secure recognition of the profession of Sign Language interpreting i. To develop an environment where the Association and its members work with each other collegially, respectfully and with professional integrity j. To be responsive to its members k. To do all such things to further the objectives of the Association.
