Description
The Charitys objects (Objects) are specifically restricted to the advancement of education, the promotion of heritage, environmental conservation and improvement for the public benefit, the promotion of urban and rural regeneration through sustainable development; the promotion of citizenship and of healthy physical recreation, and the relief of those in need by reason of their youth, unemployment, social or economic circumstances; in particular by the following means: (a) to operate centres of excellence for education in the heritage and environmental sectors, and provide opportunities through project based learning related to the waterways, their management, heritage and leisure-time use, for both formal and informal education: (i) to provide accessible, modular, project based courses which are accredited and lead to formal qualifications; and engage young people, the unemployed and other economically disadvantaged persons, in waterways activities to improve their employability and life chances by providing training opportunities which are accessible to those who would otherwise struggle with formal education; (ii) to provide educational opportunities through waterways based activities for personal and professional development, enhancing the work and life skills of participants; (iii) to provide community outreach and educate the public, promoting a greater awareness and appreciation of the scenic, natural, built and cultural heritage of waterways and their natural surroundings and to provide programmes and activities relating to the conservation, restoration, safe leisure-time use, heritage and enjoyment of waterways and their built and natural environments; and through such activities promote the social inclusion of disadvantaged persons, volunteering and healthy physical recreation. (b) to promote the sustainable development of the waterways as a means for the social and economic regeneration of areas of deprivation; and to undertake projects and programmes which conserve, restore and improve waterways, their structures, towpaths, and natural environments and surroundings for the public benefit, for navigation, for recreational and the leisure time pursuits of the public; and (c) in furtherance of the above stated objects, or any of them, to support, practically and/or financially, the charitable work of the Lagan Navigation Trust, or such other similar institutions which promote the conservation, restoration and improvement of waterways, as the Trustees may from time to time determine.
