ADVANCEMENT OF EDUCATION THE DIRECT BENEFITS WHICH FLOW FROM THE PURPOSE OF GIRLGUIDING ULSTER ARE TO PROMOTE THE EDUCATION OF GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN TO HELP THEM DEVELOP, EMOTIONALLY, MENTALLY, PHYSICALLY AND SPIRITUALLY SO THEY CAN MAKE A POSITIVE CONTRIBUTION TO THEIR COMMUNITY AND THE WIDER WORLD AND DEVELOP THEIR FULL POTENTIAL. GIRLGUIDING IS A GIRL-LED CHARITY, TAKING ITS DIRECTION FROM THE EVOLVING NEEDS OF OUR YOUNG MEMBERS. WE GIVE GIRLS A VOICE – IN THE CHARITY, IN THEIR COMMUNITIES AND IN THE WORLD. YOUNG PEOPLE ARE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN SHAPING THEIR OWN PROGRAMME OF ACTIVITIES, BOTH LOCALLY AND REGIONALLY WITHIN OUR YOUTH PARTICIPATION FRAMEWORK. THE BENEFIT TO GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN IS THAT THEY WILL HAVE INCREASED CONFIDENCE, THEY WILL LEARN NEW LIFE SKILLS, WILL GAIN LEADERSHIP SKILLS AND LEARN HOW TO WORK AS A TEAM. THE WIDER BENEFIT TO THE COMMUNITY AT LARGE IS ENHANCED SOCIAL EDUCATION AND RESPONSIBLE CITIZENSHIP THAT FLOWS FROM THE PURPOSE. THESE BENEFITS ARE DEMONSTRATED THROUGH THE FEEDBACK PROVIDED BY YOUNG PEOPLE AND THE VOLUNTARY LEADERS IN GIRLGUIDING UNITS, REVIEWS BY YOUTH COUNCIL, STATUTORY YOUTH SERVICES, GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS AND INDEPENDENT EVALUATIONS OF TRAINING, PROGRAMMES AND EVENTS. THERE IS NO HARM FLOWING FROM THE PURPOSE OF GIRLGUIDING ULSTER. THE CHARITY'S BENEFICIARIES ARE GIRLS. MEMBERSHIP OF GIRLGUIDING ULSTER IS OPEN TO GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN FROM ALL SECTIONS OF SOCIETY. GIRLGUIDING IS AVAILABLE TO ALL GIRLS AND YOUNG WOMEN IN NORTHERN IRELAND AGED 4 TO 25 THROUGH OUR INFORMAL EDUCATION PROGRAMME WE RUN RAINBOWS (4-7) BROWNIES (7-10) GUIDES (10-14) AND SENIOR SECTION (15 – 25) Girlguiding believes in the value of learning by doing. This is put into practice through a Method with five interlinking elements, known as the Five Essentials of guiding: • working together in small groups • encouraging self-government and decision making • a balanced and varied programme • caring for the individual • sharing a commitment to a common standard The Guiding Method is delivered to young members grouped by age into four sections: Rainbow Guides, Brownie Guides, Guides and members of The Senior Section. Its principles apply to all members, including adults.
